Inova’s first annual Implementation Science Symposium was created to allow healthcare professionals to present and learn about Implementation Science to improve patient outcomes.

Amanda Bettencourt, PhD, APRN, CCRN-K, ACCNS-P

Dr. Bettencourt is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Health at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She is also the Director of Acute Care Implementation Research at the Penn Implementation Science Center (PISCE@LDI) and a Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute. She is also a Senior Fellow in the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research. Dr. Bettencourt works at the intersection of implementation science and health services research, bringing a wealth of practical clinical implementation experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist that informs her research agenda in closing the evidence-to-practice gap with implementation research methods. Dr. Bettencourt is passionate about narrowing the evidence-to-practice gap in acute care settings using implementation science.

 

Chris Bonafide, MD, MSCE

Associate Professor, pediatric hospitalist, and implementation
scientist at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and
the University of Pennsylvania (Penn)

Chris Bonafide, MD, MSCE is an Associate Professor, pediatric hospitalist, and implementation scientist at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the University of Pennsylvania (Penn). Chris now serves as Associate Chief of General Pediatrics, Associate Director for Implementation Science at Clinical Futures (a Center of Emphasis in the CHOP Research Institute), and Director of Pediatric Implementation Research at the Penn Implementation Science Center (PISCE). Within implementation science, he is especially interested in finding the best strategies to deimplement ineffective practices in pediatric hospital care. He currently co-leads a type 3 hybrid effectiveness-deimplementation trial focused on Eliminating Monitor Overuse (The EMO Trial) and is Site PI for a type 1 hybrid trial focused on reducing unnecessary follow-up visits to primary care after hospitalization (the FAAN-C, or “fancy” trial). He collaborates and consults on numerous other implementation science trials. An avid mentor, Chris also serves as Co-Director on the Pediatric Hospital Epidemiology and Outcomes Training (PHEOT) T32 program and mentors several K awardees.

 

Dr. María Fernández

Vice President of Population Health and Implementation Science at the
University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston)

Dr. María Fernández is Vice President of Population Health and Implementation Science at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) and the founding Co- Director of the UTHealth Houston Institute for Implementation Science. Dr. Fernández is also the Lorne Bain Chair of Public Health and Medicine, Professor of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences, and Director of the Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research (CHPPR) at the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health. Dr. Fernández has spent her career leading participatory community-engaged intervention and implementation research to develop, evaluate, implement, and disseminate interventions to improve health and health equity. Her research focuses on chronic disease prevention and control among underserved populations in the U.S. and globally. Her awards include the Association for Schools and Programs of Public Health Research Excellence Award and the UTHealth President's Scholar Award for Research Excellence.
